AI Modes Extension — Privacy Policy

The AI Modes browser extension helps students understand how they engage with AI, and lets instructors import their students’ AI-conversation submissions from MyEducator for engagement analysis. This policy explains what the extension accesses, why, and what we do and do not store.

What the extension accesses

  • Your AI conversations on claude.ai, chatgpt.com, and gemini.google.com — only when you choose to capture a conversation. The text you captured is sent to aimodes.ai to produce your engagement analysis.
  • Instructors only:on app.myeducator.com, when you click “Import,” the extension reads your course roster (names, emails) and the selected activity’s student submissions (typed answers or uploaded files), using your own logged-in MyEducator session, and sends them to aimodes.ai for grading.

What we never do

  • We never store your MyEducator (or any other) password. The extension uses your existing logged-in session in your own browser. Credentials are never transmitted to or stored by aimodes.
  • We do not sell your data, use it for advertising, or share it with third parties for their own purposes.
  • The extension only acts when you click a button; it does not run in the background or track your browsing.

What is stored

  • A device token (a random identifier that links the extension to your aimodes account) is stored locally in your browser via chrome.storage.local. It contains no password.
  • Conversation text and submissions you send are processed on aimodes.ai to generate engagement feedback and are subject to the aimodes privacy practices and your institution’s data agreement. Student records are handled under FERPA; instructors control retention and can delete a course’s data at any time.

Service providers

To produce engagement analysis, conversation text is processed by our AI model providers (including Anthropic and, for multi-model coding, OpenRouter-routed providers) solely to classify engagement, and by our infrastructure providers (Supabase, Vercel). These providers process data on our behalf and do not use it to train their models.

Permissions and why

  • storage — to keep your device token so you stay connected.
  • activeTab — to read the current page only when you invoke the extension.
  • Host access to claude.ai, chatgpt.com, gemini.google.com — to capture a conversation you choose.
  • Host access to app.myeducator.com and amazonaws.com — for instructors to read the roster and download submission files during an import.
  • Host access to aimodes.ai — to send captured data to your account for analysis.
