The unit is the interaction
A mode has no fixed value outside the person, tool, task, and context that make it appropriate or costly.

Two people can use the same model for the same amount of time and perform different cognitive work. The same person can also need a different pattern when the task, stakes, available evidence, or time pressure changes. AIEM therefore treats the interaction as co-produced by four conditions rather than as a property of the user or the tool.
The person brings knowledge, habits, motives, and dispositions. The tool brings capabilities, limits, and a particular interface. The task supplies goals, uncertainty, and consequences. The context supplies time, incentives, accountability, and other people.
Fit comes before rank
A low-stakes lookup may call for Oracle. Learning a method may call for Tutor. Generating options may call for Creative Expander. A consequential claim may need Problem Setter, Critical Challenger, and Verification.
No mode is appropriate because it sits higher on a list. It is appropriate when its function fits the work that must remain human, the evidence available, and the cost of being wrong.
